SMART Tyre is a disruptive and innovative solution enhancing automotive safety, capable of measuring tires' tread depth through innovative sensing technologies and detecting possible damages and deformations.
SMART Tyre offers an highly reliable wear measurement and damage control system, insurance cost saving based on "pay-as-you-risk" model (integrated with black box), vehicle operation cost reduction (fuel optimization, tyre waste reduction and fleet management services).

More About SMART Tyre
The early detection of tire failures, together with the measurement of their tread depth, raises the safety capabilities of vehicles. Thanks to the SMART Tyre is then possible to decrease the likelihood of accidents by constantly monitoring the tire status. Statistical studies estimated that in the 34% of the road accidents vehicles have tires tread depth below the EU legal requirement estimating a reduction of accidents up to 28.5% by avoiding tyres with inadequate tread depth. Communicating data related to tire status will enable tailored insurance based on telematics and blackbox that classify risk profile and accordingly prizes (pay as you risk).
SMART Tyre enables predictive maintenance and the optimization of the tire performance with a direct effect on fuel consumption and tyre management. Longer life-time, fuel optimization, cost containment and digital management of the tyre status are some of the advantages.
How can SMART Tyre improve the fuel economy of vehicles and reduce tyre waste? Fuel consumption of a vehicle varies as a function of the tyre wear because of the rolling resistance effect. That is, the more the tyres are worn the lower the rolling resistance imposed between the tyres and the road surface. Lower rolling resistance implies that less energy is lost because of friction which in turn implies higher fuel efficiency. A precise detection of the tread depth of tyres can hence enable to (i) use tyres as much as possible thus exploiting the benefits of the low rolling resistance, while (ii) monitoring the wear to avoid circulating with tyres with tread depth below (or too close to) the legal requirement (e.g., 1.6 mm in EU). Clearly, when having a precise characterization of the status of tyres it is possible to reduce the waste, actually avoiding to replace tyres that can be still used. This will result in a life-time extension of tyres.
